This is a fascinating, if somewhat dry book. There is rich historical detail, and quite a few charts of various patterns. The author does an excellent job linking the different knitting traditions. There are "modern" patterns in several traditional styles. I put modern in quotes here because the book was originally printed some time ago, so the photos and garments themselves now appear rather dated. This doesn't actually distract much from the book if you want it as a reference, as I did. My only real complaint is that it was obviously printed in a much smaller format originally, and just copied over into this larger book without changing the typeface. So the writing is cramped and there's too much white space. It would have benefited from new typesetting.
Good reference book for the experienced knitter. No pretty pictures but lots of information. I use it when looking for basic information.
Just a note for folks looking for alternative knitting methods - this book has a review of the history of traditional knitting and variations but no instruction on traditional other-than-two-needle knitting techniques. Ordered this after search for nalbinding turned this title up but no nalbinding instruction within.
