When I first read the outrageously ridiculous description for this book, I knew I had to read it. Not because I thought it would be good, but because I thought that it would at least make me laugh. Boy was I wrong. It got to the point where I only finished it so that I could say I survived this awful book. The description promises the reader a vampire viking angel that fights ISIS and demon vampires and ends up travailing back in time, all while falling in love with a hot chef. Sounds like it should at least be action packed right? Wrong. Not only does the main character, Cnut -yes, that is the characters actual name- not fight any members of ISIS, he is not even the one to save the sister who has been kidnapped. The whole reason he met Andrea was because she needed someone to help save her sister. He ends up having one of his brothers save her while he goes back in time to canoodle with his new lady friend. When it comes to the vampire demons, he fights maybe three or four throughout the entire book. The action lasts for maybe a paragraph and there is never a sense of real danger. Now in a romance book, I might be willing to overlook the lack of action and plot if the relationship was worth reading about, but it's not. They meet, they get the tingles, they fight, they kiss, and they fight again. There is no real chemistry between them, everything seems forced and unnatural. You wanna know the real plot of this story? It is that the two of them go back in time and play house, where she takes on the traditional household chores while he goes out and does manly things. He admires the way she doesn't make a fuss and helps out with the cooking and the cleaning even though she has been plucked from the 21st century with a stranger and is way out of her element. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with a woman wanting to help out and a man providing for his household, I'm just saying that in a book that promises demons and ISIS, this should not be the majority of your book.It also doesn't help that the main villain is completely laughable. His name is Jasper for one thing and perhaps it is just me, but that name is about as intimidating as Tim or Sheldon. He is the kind of bad guy that you look at and feel pity for because he is just that pathetic. His underling, Zeb, is also weird. Towards the end of the book, he comes in takes Andrea back to her home and drops her off safe and sound and then does the same for Cnut. I guess he wants to be a good guy, but it reflects poorly on the hero when the supposed bad guy is the one who saves the day.So that is everything wrong with the actual plot, but the writing is just awful. When a character laughs, Sandra Hill writes it out as "Ha ha ha". She also had a tendency to write "or something" and "or whatever" at the end of many of her sentences. For example, "Her hair was in a bun or something". There is literally no reason to write it that way. Just say the woman's hair was in a bun! There were many times that I would stare at a sentence, reread it and sigh because it was just awful. And lastly, the part that made me put the book down and walk away for a good couple of hours is this:"'Tingle. Every time you come near me, I smell peppermint, and my skin gets all tingly. Look.'" She drew up the long sleeve of her gown to show him her forearm where the blonde hairs were standing on end. 'See. Tingly.' He grinned at her, not taking her seriously at all. Or so she thought. Until he extended his own forearm to show her the dark blond hairs raised like a field of erotic antennae. 'Coconut tingles,' he explained."Congratulations Sandra Hill, that was probably the worst thing I have ever read.
I like to read books with really weird story lines but the writing in this book drove me nuts. The writer really lost me when she referenced Game of Thrones being on Netflix. You can't watch GOT on Netflix! Or when characters kept saying "Did someone say ...". There were some other embarrassingly out of touch pop culture references as well. And sentences that went on, and on, and on, and on,,,,,,,,this author loves Commas. The idea of vampire viking angels is creative, I'll give the author that.
Well here we are, all of the 7 Deadly Sins (and 7 brothers) taken care of so is this the end of the series .... of course not, there are some serious threads hanging that require 1 more book at a minimum and no I won't tell you since that will be a spoiler (which means some doofus will spoil it)While I really have enjoyed this series including this book, I was put off a bit by Cnut being portrayed as a pretty smart guy in the other books and seemed like she made him a bit more stupid in this book about him. He and Andrea made a great couple, plus the locations and the plot was much different than the other books. All these things work together to make this a very entertaining novel for this series.Bottom Line: The romance was kind of weak but enjoyable, the plot changed after the first couple of chapters and took off on a different line than the other books, to be honest the "bad guys" played a much smaller part than other books. So 4 Stars and can't wait to get the next one (not a cliffhanger but very close in some ways) and hats off to Sandra Hill for being able to take such a ridiculous premise as Viking Vampire Angels and make them addicting and entertaining reading.
Although there is much of the similar explanations, back stories and descriptions used this story was unique and endearing. I feel as though this one was the best in addressing the deadly sin and the struggle to overcome it. The time travel element was delightful and well used. I also enjoyed how well the relationships of all the characters developed, nothing seemed forced or wildly unbelievable. This last book could have been longer to give us more opportunity to enjoy the sweet redemption.
Oh we the reader's knew the end was near and knowing there were only seven brothers. However, if Sandra can become creative and bring the brothers back and keep the humorous storytelling, I am all for it. Driving the Devine Mike up the wall is always a good storyline. Love the road your Deadly Angles series has taken me, a follower from the beginning. Sandra Hill has been a worthy read not only this series but, others.
There has been little I haven't enjoyed about Sandra Hill's writing! Her books lead me to wander from my day and relax, laugh, and enjoy my "alone time". This book has been another one of her great escapes. I highly recommend the entire series! The characters seem alive (even though they are Viking Vampires!) and the reader invests in narrative. So if you are looking for a way to escape the demands of the day and enjoy a good laugh, this is the book and the series for you!
This story line was quite different from the other Deadly Angels books, but in a surprisingly good way. You knew how it had to end, but there were enough twists and turns to keep your face buried in it's pages.
I love Sandea Hill books! I constantly found myself laughing throughout the story. The characters were familiar, funny and those who deserve it get their due! I also like the way Sandra includes and updates on prior characters. Worth the read!
