David L. Barnhart, Jr., grew up in Huntsville, Alabama, where he attended Holmes Street and Trinity United Methodist Churches. He and his wife, Angela, have a son named Leo. David went to college at Oglethorpe University, earned his M.Div. from Candler School of Theology, and finished his Ph.D. in Homiletics and Social Ethics at Vanderbilt University. He currently serves as associate pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, where he leads Contact, the contemporary worship service, and directs his church's mission and outreach programs.

This book presents a good, short overview of the debate on human sexuality that's happening th now in the Methodist Church.
Interesting book That seems to reasonably fairly present both sides of this difficult issue.
This book is based primarily on the liberal stance. God's word is completely discounted.
Although I am not a member of the Methodist church, I read this book to see how Methodists are attempting to tackle this issue. This book appears to be written to support a change to the Methodist Church "Book of Discipline" that would make homosexuality an acceptable lifestyle for church leadership as well as allow for the church to perform same sex marriages. The book is quite biased, but claims otherwise. The book rarely quotes bible verses regarding the negative aspects of homosexuality; nor does it quote the requirements for church leadership, but rather asserts that because mankind's attitudes about homosexuality are changing, the church should change its definition of marriage to include two of the same sex. I found the book to be factually incorrect (several statements made about past conferences did not pan out when I checked the conference minutes and read the archives from the newsprint), and extremely condescending if you do not agree with their viewpoint.
This is a helpful, very recent review of the UMC's theological and political divisions around human sexuality. It is a specific, useful review for those who have been following the conversation and/or been active in promoting it. It is also useful to newcomers who want to find out more about the scriptural questions and/or how UMC polity is created, changed and implemented. The authors achieve balance as they relate the perspectives of Methodists across the connection.
The best effort I’ve seen yet trying to present both sides fairly. Great teacher’s guide.
Good, multi-perspective book. Used it to be the focus for a small group discussion on UMC’s conflict over how to address homosexuality.
