The one-page intro was better than the stories. Maybe I'm being overly sensitive, but there was a lot of name-calling in three very short tales. I'd take Brer Rabbit any day. These three stories were simple enough (and of course "doing voices" kept my 18 month old involved), but there's very little to take away from this (except that tigers, crocodiles, and dogs are "stupid"?). The artwork is amazing and provided lots for little fingers to point at.
These stories are very cutely written and the illustrations are pretty, however, there aren't enough of them. The stories are good for a ~3-year-old but there aren't enough accompanying illustrations to show the kid. Some pages have nothing but text.
The Adventures of Mouse Deer: Favorite Folktales of Southeast Asia is a very well illustrated tale. Definitely has a whole earth feel to it, multiple-culture, etc My six year old grandson liked it, especially as it was on my Kindle. I don't think it is .too different than the tricky coyote stories. However, I did not like that all the solutions, though clever, were misleading.
A fun story, for the whole family. From children to adults. Everyone in the family can take turn reading this take odd tale of the mouse deer. it is fun loving story that that the whole family from grandpa,to toddler can share. Do yourself a favor ,click off the tv and red this as family a for unlimited fun, conversation The conversation that will follow will be a lasting memory.
My kids really loved this short book. We had a good time laughing at the silly stories. Only one thing - I would have preferred the word "stupid" from several stories to be omitted.
My kids loved this story. The illustrations are beautiful. Mouse deer is a traditional Indonesian folk hero/trickster, maybe a little along the lines of Brer Rabbit, always outwitting bigger and fiercer animals.
All the adventures of Mouse Deer were fun to read to my 6 yr old boy. The Mouse Deer was cunning and his sarcasm added humor. This isn't a picture book, but your child will be entertained by the tales of this little rascal to notice.
Folk tales are always good for teaching life lessons. This book would also be good for comparing and contrasting Similar tales from other areas of the world.
