This edition is significantly improved in usability ( I have the 26th and 29th editions as well as this one). The information is reorganized in a way which I think is far superior to the previous versions. The guide comes with 6 maps printed on 3 sheets. The colors on the maps are better to me than the previous style and there are some good detail updates. For example, the Bondcliff Trail and The Lincoln Woods Trails have the current names and terminations.I really like the way the hike statistics are organized. They are in neat tables. The various trails linking different peaks also have tabular stats. And even better, the various hikes for the geographical regions are rated easy to difficult.As a hike leader, I think the amount of information and the clean way it is organized will be very helpful in planning the hike as well as communicating the relevant information to prospective attendees.Props to the editor Steve Smith. Top shelf work. If you're in Lincoln, his shop is the Mountain Wanderer.
My 1983 edition of the AMC White Mountain Guide measures 6 by 3.5 inches and weighs 7.7 ounces -- about the same as my cellphone, only thicker. My newly purchased 30th edition (2017) of the Guide measures 7 by 5 inches and weighs a POUND. Now, I have spent many, many dollars trying to get the very lightest gear, so that I can enjoy hiking to the fullest. Why do I have to lug a White Mountain Guide that is unnecessarily weighty? My conclusion is: most of the trails haven't moved much, though some names have changed; maybe I'll just use my new maps and my old guide.And while I'm on the subject of maps -- the paper maps that come with the Guide are useless on the trail; the average life expectancy of a paper map in foul weather is about 10 seconds, as I have learned through bitter experience. My advice would be to spend the extra money and get the latest AMC plastic maps (which are ALSO much larger now, compared to the petite yet fully functional AMC plastic maps of yesteryear).
These maps are NOT waterproof. They are in fact very fragile. The included picture shows the wear and tear from the ten mile Baldface Circle loop on a sunny day with the map being folded to the relevant section, and stored in the hip belt pocket of my pack. That being said, I LIKE these maps. I didn't have time to scan and print the relevant sections and pack copies out in a ziploc bag, which is what I recommend. In lieu of that, I would pair these maps with the National Geographic map set of the White Mountains, much more durable, but also cluttered, which makes reading elevation a chore. A more recent version than the 30th edition may be desired as I ran the wrong way down the falling waters trail onto a spur trail to shining rock. The spur wasn't on the map, and I had myself a fun little class 4 scramble down to the bottom of shining rock and then back up. The book looked great from the little I used it. Hope this helps!
I just got the 30th Edition in the mail and hats off to Steve Smith! This is a beautiful guide, wonderfully packaged, with the maps included. Any hiker who doesn't give this edition 5 stars is a dink. Sure, there are other guides out there that might be better for nature walks, family hikes, etc, but if you're a HIKER, peak bagger, or map reader, this is what you want and this is what you need. And don't be a cheap bastard like me and buy it on Amazon. Go to Steve's bookstore, the Mountain Wanderer in Lincoln, NH, and buy it there and get some mountain wisdom from Steve.
An excellent guide! I've been hiking for years, but only recently moved to New England. A coworker recommended the White Mountain Guide as the only hiking book I would need to purchase for New Hampshire and they were right! Look no further for a comprehensive guide! There is even more detail than I was expecting, so the reading is definitely dry, but perfect for trail info and the included maps saved me the trouble of tracking down various region maps individually. The only draw back is that the maps aren't waterproof.
Must have for hiking the White’s. Make sure you use updated versions. Mine was the latest, my hiking partner’s was 2 years old. Mine had stuff in it his didn’t and some of it was important to know.
This is the best hiking guidebook to the White Mountains. Each new edition brings substantial improvements, and this 30th edition is no exception.
This guide is excellent for anyone wanting to hike the white mountains. It comes with 6 topographic maps to aid in deciding what trails to hike. The book is easy to use as a guide and has accurate descriptions of the trails.
