I implore every one of my test prep students to practice, practice, practice. In order for them to succeed, not only do they need good instruction, but also they need good material to supplement that instruction. I can confidently assign work from The Tutorverse's SHSAT book knowing that my students will exercise the lessons learned during session. Each question is carefully written and has a detailed answer explanation in the back of the book. With over 1,000 practice questions, this book compiles the key concepts tested by the SHSAT (updated to reflect the 2017-18 changes!). There's a diagnostic test at the beginning of the book and a practice test at the end so each student can trace her progress, and with regular practice aided by The Tutorverse's book, I'm sure she will be happy with the results. I know I have been.
Pros: I've looked through the official handbook released in june by the doe and must say that the questions in this book are quite similar to those in the handbook. The book is really useful for helping students practice different topics, especially for students who need an introduction of more practice in those areas.Cons: since the doe released their official handbook, I see even more how accurate the content is, but the book does need to update their practice tests to reflect the abcd/efgh multiple choice options. Also, the grid in math questions are at the beginning, not the end. I've had the book since April, so I can only assume they'll update, though these are minor.
In my 12 years of classroom teaching and private tutoring, I have purchased countless test prep books. I know what I like and don’t like in a test prep book and I absolutely LOVE this one!The diagnostic in the beginning is a full-length test which is a wonderful way to introduce students to the format of the actual SHSAT exam. Answers with detailed explanations are provided, as well as the question’s topic so students and tutors can gauge strengths and weaknesses.In lieu of pages of “lessons†(that are usually neither student-friendly nor comprehensive in test prep books), the authors packed 250+ pages with test-like questions organized by the same topics from the diagnostic answer key so students and tutors can decide which areas to focus on. After we had exhausted all the other test prep books, we got this one for a little extra practice... And it was great. Lots of questions, in all the categories. Great book. Now we just have to wait til March for my son's score!
One of the few editions I could find on short notice this summer that includes the new poetry passages that will be on the exam in October 2018.
As an English Teacher who works with students practicing for the SHSAT test, I am always looking for supplementarymaterial to use with my students. Tutor verse serves that purpose. It is a well-organized, easy to use text that isgeared to the skills needed for the test. I recommend this book. Further, I was impressed with the customer service representative who was truly helpful in resolving a problem I raised. The company wants you to be satisfied with their product and you will be.
