I recently had an opportunity to visit with Christian leaders in Bethlehem and this book was recommended by several of them. After completing it I can see why.Raheb is a Palestinian Christian and his thesis is essentially, "What if we read the Bible, specifically the New Testament, from the perspective of occupied people." Most Christians are aware that the region where Jesus lived and taught was under Roman occupation while He walked the Earth. From the Palestinian perspective, their region has been occupied for most of history, including by Israel today. Raheb shows the reader Jesus' words from this perspective. While some statements Raheb makes about Jesus' thought process are obviously supposition I truly appreciated his perspective. I am a Christian who has lived my entire life in America and it's only been recently that I have thought about the Palestinian perspective, which is why I found this book informative and thought provoking.I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in understanding the current conflicts in the Middle East

In Faith in the Face of Empire Mitri Raheb addresses that basic challenge with a call for imagination and hope informed by a theology of “wanting to live (for a belief,)” claiming Paul’s insistence that Jesus died that we might live. He calls for bold the bold witness that may lead to martyrdom, while urging “a culture of life is desperately needed today in the Middle East and throughout the world.” It is here that he makes one of only two references to the Gospel according to John: “Living for community is necessary in the twenty-first century so that ‘all may have life, and have it abundantly’ (Jn 10:10)” (Kindle 1942ff)Doctor Raheb’s work is powerful and persuasive. His interpretation that “The meek shall inherit the land” turns classical understanding to the Beatitudes upside down. His emphasis that the first Christians were “More than Victims” is cored in Jesus’ resurrection appearances as the disciples, frozen in fear, are sent out into the world is liberating. He writes:“It is not by chance that the three Synoptic Gospels end with a call to cross boundaries and reach out into the world.” (Kindle 1245ff) Pastor Raheb’s insight can be enriched by seeing this is equally true in the pastoral proclamation of the Gospel according to John.R. S Sugirtharajah’s observation that “This mainstream scholarship is insular and obsessed with its own fixed and rigid Eurocentric questions….On the whole, current biblical scholarship has generated artificial needs and convoluted the biblical histories, complicated textual reconstruction and led its readers astray from the true needs and wants of people.” is absolutely true of most work on the Gospel according to John. In an abstract for a paper delivered at the International Society of Biblical literature I wrote: Contrary to early church commentators John was not primarily evangelizing…nor mainly polemicizing…nor theologizing…. John was portraying to fearful Christians a powerful Jesus.”John describes numerous people moving from distrust or timid trust to become open, even bold witnesses to the Jesus, the Messiah, whose kingdom is present in Judea and in Jerusalem…already. To a people made homeless and refugees by the destruction of the temple and the complete captivity of Jerusalem and the land itself (which they held dear) Jesus invites them to be at home in him, yes, to bear fruit. He shepherds them into one community, gathering the other flock.John’s very human Jesus uses language of compassion toward his fellow Jews and language of high emotion toward those called “the Jews.” Scholars sanitize Jesus failing to recognize his complete identity with the people and his own feelings of anger.John writes “that you may keep trust that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that trusting you will have life in his name.” “The Son of God” contrasts emperors’ claims to be “son of a god.” Confessing (not doubting) Thomas declares Jesus to be “Lord and God” a title Domitian will later insist be used in addressing him (and likely to have been used in the provinces well before that.)When Jesus appears to the fear-frozen disciples he greets them with peace, shows them his hands and his side (wounds now healed, but wounds nonetheless) and sends them out into the world as he was sent. The world that hates them... but the world that God loves.Pastor Raheb’s authentic voice stands in its own right. It has stimulated these additional comments. Today, wherever we are in this imperialistic world.

Dr. Raheb writes in practical terms of the role of faith in action in forming an new future for not only Palestine, but the Middle East. His focus is on the internal map each person must develop for her/himself. The way to freedom, equality, and self determination starts inside every person. Real change comes from within, as Jesus said often. And that starts with faith. But it is not only faith, as Dr Raheb points out, but informed faith. One needs to look soberly on the history of the region, as he does in this text, in order to understand that the only "solutions" that will last are those emanating from the region itself. Empires come and go. Their brilliant solutions for those under their domination also come and go. The people of the region will devise their own future, if left to it. But first they must search within themselves for what they truly want the future to look like. Dr. Raheb provides a roadmap to do just that. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in a better, more in-depth understanding of the Middle East.

The author, a Palestininan Prostestant pastor living in Bethlehem, traces the plight of people living in the area through the ages. Oppressed by the empires on whose border they exist, they somehow manage to survive. He identifies today's empire as the United States with Israel as its client state. The book is interesting because it presents a point of view different from one favoring Israel without question.
