I can't begin to explain how this book touched my heart! Although I am a woman, reading about Joseph makes me want to improve on living a life of integrity and forgiveness.I originally purchased this book in hardcover to give to a friend because he reminded me so much of the Joseph that I've often read about in the Bible. Well, through circumstance with my friend reading it, I decided to download it to my Kindle so I could read it as well. It was hard to put down!Joseph was an amazing man! I went through every emotion while reading this book from laughing to crying to ultimately falling in love with with Joseph's heart after God.I highly recommend this book, and give warning .....be prepared for changes within, it will grab your heart and make you want to be a better person! enJOY the read!!
This book is one of a series and I have read two others. Charles Swindoll is a great storyteller. He has the reader read the Scripture that the story of Joseph is based on. It is done in sections. Within each section he explains the background of life time in the Bible including their customs and Jewish beliefs. Then he applies this to modern every day examples to help you in your life as you learn about Joseph.
Swindoll delivers again with one of the greatest (prelude to Christ) characters of the old testament. his telling of Joseph while lacking some of the more interesting details per Jasher and Jubilees, is one of the best I've ever read. when it comes to biblical biographies, Swindoll always seems to come through brilliantly!
I really enjoyed this book about Joseph. Although I was familiar with the story of Joseph it gave lots of insights that helped me understand the story better. There are things you know from reading the Biblical story but this gave additional insights that really brought his character to life! There are cultural things explained that are not apparent to us because our culture is so different.
I'm now reading Joseph, and I've already read two other character studies in this series by Chuck Swindoll. I've gotten a lot out of all of them. Swindoll does a good job of identifying why the person was and acted the way they did. And he draws many parellels to our lives today. In this book I've learned a lot about the family life Joseph came from: he was a favored son of a passive father. But it's not just the facts that are recounted. Swindoll goes back to study Joseph's father, Jacob, and the behavior and events that shaped him. We learn the impact of all that history on Joseph's life. When the jealous brothers eventually sold him into slavery, this book explores the works God began to do in his life and the immeasurable faith Joseph must have had in order to sustain him through the tough years that followed. I simply enjoy Swindoll's attitude and style. He pulls a lot of wisdom out of the verses in the Bible and helps bring it to life. You can easily imagine yourself in Joseph's shoes and how you would have responded. You learn the lessons of trusting in God through difficult situations and the difference that YOUR attitude can have while you wait.
This book on the life of Joseph, has given me insight into what dynamic faith can do in a person's life. It is a story of perseverance by one man to do the right thing in spite of what will happen to him....and his reward for continuing steadfastly to be used for God's purpose, in spite of difficulties and discouragement; .Chuck Swindoll is one of my favorite authors and his series on Great Lives from God's Word is stellar. Joseph is beset by many of the problems that afflict us today...and some that none of us would ever think of being afflicted with!...but whose faith is a model for us all and shows what God will do in our own lives if we will but have a faith like that of Joseph.
Chuck Swindoll's peek into the life of Joseph will make you look at each Biblical character differently. Joseph's was much more than a "From the pit to the palace" story as one of grace, forgiveness, gentleness, love, and family. This book provides an in depth look into the life of Joseph as well as Jacob his father. I look forward to reading others in the series.
Great book because Joseph was a biblical titan. The author does him justice and "preachy" detours are few enough not to be problematic. (I'm in favor of preaching--just let Joseph speak for himself rather than occasional "now where is this coming from".
