We purchased this instead of a folding North Carolina map. We are seniors, and the larger format is perfect and the detail is just what we needed. The difference between this and your normal "Atlas" type book is that this shows many more points of interest to the normal person-- If you want to explore an area, the Gazetteer is the format for you. If you are a business traveler who needs to get from point A to point B the quickest way, this will have more information than you want. We live in Northern Georgia and have traveled all around the surrounding areas for a long time, and appreciate the type of detail this format offers. For dedicated travelers and retirees, this is superior to any other format.
Beats the pants off a Rand McNally when you are off the main road. Not quite down to the goat path level but close. I use these when traveling the backroads. It covers details not found in the big name maps and doesn't get confused like your GPS. You get to see on the map that your road terminates vs relying on you GPS taking you down and round and discovering you now have to backup almost a mile.
There really isn't any competition for this publication. The trout streams are all included, back roads are usually shown and the print is mostly legible save in the very tight spots. Page edge,, side and bottom, is wide enough to write notes on. With normal use it will get dog-eared, but it won't fall apart. Every 10 years or so I get a new one....but save and transfer the important "margin notes.."
I moved to North Carolina a year ago and thought this would help me get around. I should have paid more attention. This atlas is more about finding where to go to do things--like fishing, hiking, canoeing, hunting, etc. It's less about navigating the roads.
I have DeLorme atlases for NC, Georgia and Florida. As well as readable large scale contour maps, each atlas lists anddescribes sites for RV and tent camping, hiking, bicycling, canoeing and other activities. I use them more than mystate highway maps. Well worth the price!
If you have any intentions of being able to get around without a GPS this is the route to go. Invest in a good compass and you are good to go well as long as you know how to use it LOL there are plenty of videos on YouTube to teach you
I raise goats so loved the reference to goat paths. Here we say pig paths. Anyone it has helped me as a truck driver.
Excellent atlas. Very handy when your GPS goes down or you get up into the hills of western North Carolina and you need something that works under all conditions.
