About the Author
Jasser Auda is the Founding Director of Al-Maqasid Research Centre in the Philosophy of Islamic Law, a project of Al-Furqan Foundation, London, UK. He has a multi-disciplinary academic background and has written two Ph.D. theses on Islamic Philosophy of Law and Systems Analysis and Design, in the University of Wales ,UK, and the University of Waterloo, Canada, respectively. Dr. Auda is a Visiting Lecturer to a number of academic institutes in Canada, UK, Egypt, and India.

Brilliant book. There is no better book available in the english language that provides the same critical approach to understanding islamic philosophy. Encompasses traditional approaches from notable scholars who wrote on the subject, while providing a practical means for contemporary thought and application while drawing from the fundamentals and principals of the religious text, scriptures, and historical context. Highly recommend.
Amazing book worth the purchase
This book is a must read for those individuals interested in understanding what Islamic scholars (both classic and contemporary) have said about the higher purposes of `Islamic Law' or maqasid. The author offers a critical perspective on classic conceptions and classifications of maqasid as well as of the evolution of contemporary theories. Auda's aim is to build a novel and multidisciplinary approach that draws heavily on systems research but that remains grounded in previous understandings. In doing so he respects a long tradition of scholarship while opening the discipline of the theory/fundamentals of Islamic law to important insights from other disciplines. The application of systems analysis and theory to the study of Islamic law should encourage scholars and practitioners in other fields to reconsider the importance and relevance of the maqasid for their respective areas of expertise and to take this important work further by promoting the advancement of life, liberty, intellect, and dignity among other higher objectives of the shariah. It is one of the few uncompromising works in the field that are accessible to English readers.
I have read this book from cover to cover and it is one of the very best I have read on Islamic law. I would highly recommend it especially if you are interested in Islamic legal reform.
