I grew up reading this book. My brother was Brother Eagle and I was Sister Sky. It is a beautifully illustrated book with a powerful, well written message. I had to find it for my children to grow up on because the moral of the story is one I want to pass on for generations to come. Chief Seattle was a wise man with incredible integrity. His words accompanied by the incredible artwork creates a best seller and staple book for everyone, children and adults too!
Children learn very early in school that the first people in our land were very serious about being keepers of the earth. I have been teaching a graduate class for teachers concerning the protection of our environment and how we can help our children understand that if we are to survive in this world we have to protect our home, Planet Earth. Children have a very strong sense of justice at an early age and they know that it is "not fair" to be careless of our environment and perhaps destroy it before others can enjoy it. The words of Chief Seattle, above, remind us that we can be very careless and not protect our world from pollution and waste, or we can be good stewards of our home and save it for future generations.
This book is a treasure. The beauty of the story and the incredible artwork is such a joy to experience. This book is in an elite category of its own. So happy that I bought it.
This is a hard to find edition of this beautiful story that was written so many years ago. Great for adults and children.
A must-have book to share with kids of all ages. Really gets conservation conversation moving in the right direction without the guilt-trip. Not the first copy I've owned and it won't be the last. I just keep passing them out as the children in my life reach the stage of understanding.
The words of Chief Seattle should be a must read for everyone, young and old alike. Susan Jeffers' illustrations make the words even more magical and timeless. I read the story many, many times to my children growing up and I could never finish without a tear and an apology to my child for crying! Both words and illustrations are very moving - a wonderful gift for kids, parents and any grown up. Buffalo
