It's hard to find any form of social media free of some sort of credit history/credit score commercial or ad these days. With a person's credit score affecting so much of our lives nowadays, having a good score can make a huge difference in every financial action a person takes.Like most "Dummies" books, this one is very approachable for those of us who aren't accountants or financial advisors and who dislike even balancing our checkbooks. Having a bad credit score is something many are facing after the last several years of financial/economic stress, and this book offers no-nonsense ways to help get your financial dealings back in track and your credit score going in the up direction.The section on fraud that discuses the so-called "credit fixers" should be a mandatory read for every person applying for their first credit line. There's so many places out there offering a quick fix for a problem that can only be fixed with time and vigilance. Sadly many people fall into their trap because they want to take the easy way out. Fixing a credit score takes a lot of time, but too many people learn this lesson the hard way. The sections discussing the various types of bankruptcies, credit consolidation and repayment companies, and their pros and cons also should be mandatory reading for anyone in this situation. So much is left out when people file for bankruptcy or use a credit consolidation service that even those who've done weeks of research into both will be surprised at how much information is left out or assumed in both processes.As with any financial material, things can get a bit sluggish to read, but don't skip or skim pages. There are wonderful little tidbits that are easily missed this way. If you have kids about to start college and their own credit histories, get them this book. This is definitely one of those "I wish I'd known then what I know now" type books that can help prevent serious issues down the road. It also gives good advice for newbies on how to establish as good credit history and credit score, and what to do to keep them.The moral of this book: if a credit fix seems too good to be true, IT IS. Take the time and effort to fix your credit the right way, and reap the serious financial benefits. If you can't afford a personal account and/or financial planner, this book is well worth the cost and time to read.
I have purchased several books on credit repair and the Credit Repair Kit for Dummies is the most informative, organized and practical of them all. The only subject I am still looking for is a way to make and additional, not a deleted line item on one of my credit reports. When I talk to people about credit repair and how I have gained 124 FICO points in less than a year I direct them to this book as a starting point. Best wishes on your journey to put the past behind, learn from past mistakes and move forward to a better financial future. JB
This book is a lifesaver. I have been working on rebuilding my credit since the beginning of the year, and this book has provided me a lot of information that I did not otherwise find online, although I have not gone through the entire thing. If you're looking to turn your life around the financially savvy way, you should definitely buy this book. But it's not ALL about credit. Work an extra job, have garage sales, and learn to budget and save your money. It's tough work, but it's definitely worth it in the end!
