As a music instructor, I purchased this book to assist in my guitar lessons for my younger students. I briefly looked through the entire book and the lessons and theory development is explained very well and should be easy for young budding guitar players! I am looking forward to utilizing this book with my students!
I have been teaching guitar lessons for almost 2 years and I highly recommend this book for helping kids learn the basics of guitar.I would say ages 7 to 12 would be good ages for this book. I also paired this book with learning chords and scales and that seemed to work well. You really just have to gauge the child's ability to comprehend and their drive to want to practice.If you're a parent with a child interested in learning guitar, I highly recommend this book. Even if you don't know much about guitar, you'll be able to take your kid through it. It goes at a slow enough pace that the kids can follow along. And it's detailed enough that a parent with little to know musical background could possibly take the child through it.When you pair the Guitar Course with the Notespeller book, it really adds to helping the kids understand it all. Exactly what we were looking for! Purchased for my five year old to start learning to play guitar. My only concern was other reviews saying they could not figure out how to get the audio portion online, but the inside cover of the book had the website and a code to enter that quickly and easily took us to the audio. I downloaded the app (Purple Player) and we had no problem playing the audio tracks. We're enjoying learning the basics at home; lessons start soon.
I got this book for me, I am 62 years old and wanted to learn the Ukulele. It covers tuning, strumming, and holding the ukulele, all the basics. One thing I needed was a book to show my the fingering for the chords. This does that well. It was disappointing that it only teaches 4 chords. C, C7, G7 and F. But is does start you into reading music and how to play each note on which string. It has lots of pictures and good graphics to show the method of playing. There are some songs to practice with each lesson. After practicing all the things is this book and mastering it you will be wanting more as this book doesn't take you very far into playing the ukulele.
I am so glad I found this book. It's teaching me & allowing me to teach my kids at the same time. I tried taking lessons but gave up. I felt that I'm missing something, and it dawned on me that I needed to go back to the beginning. Adults beginner books teaches as if you already know some methods so that is why I still felt a little lost. This book took me to where I needed to begin. The beginning; remember everyone learns at different pace and that doesn't mean that something is wrong with you. It just means that you have to know your strength and work in it. Once I started using this book, it filled in all the gaps and as I've said I'm now teaching myself and my kids and enjoying every moment of it.
I had it for an hour, I'm returning it. The content/lessons look decent but the book isn't well made. Please heed the warnings of other reviewers who say that the pages fall out easily, I didn't. I opened up the book to review before using it with my kids. After flipping through the first 20 pages, many of them began falling out. It's a shame because from the initial lessons I saw it looked great for my 7-year-old son. My negative review is for the poorly made book itself and not the content. I'm disappointed, if it were cheaper I'd keep it and put it in a binder.
I am using this Guitar Course with a 10 year old student. I like the theory sheets in the book. The student is enjoying playing with the CD. The one finger chords are easy for very young students. I am planning to use it with a family with several young children in a class format.
We used Book 1 in this series and did well with it. My 5yo and 7yo were both learning. They both benefitted from having the CD to practice with. It plays the exact thing the child is supposed to play (not accompanying chords), as if they are playing along with their instructor. This way, if they forget how a song sounds when they are alone practicing, or what rhythm they are supposed to use, they have something to go by. At the end of Book 1, my 7yo was ready to move on to a more mature book, but my 5yo is staying with this series. She enjoys simple types of kid's songs, as well as the pictures! I was surprised to see that the pictures in this, Book 2, are NOT in color as they are in Book 1. Not really a big deal, but a difference. My 7yo decided that it is actually good, because as the 5yo learns each song, she can COLOR IN the picture that goes with it, as a reward for learning! Great idea....
